I use an old 386 and Arachne for email and very occasional browsing.

I use Win98 and Firefox for browsing now. It's faster, more robust.
Handles everything I run into without problems. (IE was mostly unusable
on the same machine because of pop-ups and trojan horses and other
crap)

I'm not singing the praises of windows. Too many things that drive me nuts about it. For instance, embedding explorer in the OS so you can't do without it :)

But in my experience with friends and family tell me the same thing about IE, a simple popup blocker(e.g. google's) does the trick. I do prefer opera(free and adfree now), mozilla, or firefox to IE but it's not hard at all to use IE and avoid popups, trojans, and the like.
