AFAIK it is illegal to dump the stuff in landfill here. I think
it goes into containers and gets shipped to third world countries
where they strip out what they can and are able to legally dump
the rest.

I know of a few places here that sell rebuilt computers but most
of them are $300-400 or more.

"Throw" being the operative word! PC boards, hard disks, floppy
drives don't like that kind of treatment.
