To follow-up a bit, once you have the WFW Files, extract them, then you have to 
install "new protocol", the TCP/IP, otherwise you will be limited to 
NetBUI/BIOS.  The website titled World of Windows Networking did have good 
tutorial on the how to.  Google that one.

IIRC, you have to download the TCP/IP protocol in the old Windows for 
Workgroups version, and use it...

Although a good LAN connection could be made with XP <-> DOS/win98
computers using XP <-> Win98 LAN (58MB of photographs in one directory
in 2 minutes) to transmit to the other computer) I would like to try
this in DOS with the DOS/win98 computer to the XP-machine.

Downloaded the above ftp-site with Arachne (Ray's version) and got:
DSK3-1.exe and DSK3-2.exe

Ran the .exe and the setup.exe in the C:\NET directory.

First problem: I had to choose a network-card from the list of about 50
cards... but mine was not there.
Eminent EM1028 with RTL8139D chipset is too modern for the list?

So I choose SMC Ethercard, All types except 8013/A

(BTW: this card is doing a good job with Arachne connecting to the
internet and connecting the two machines in windows) So cables etc. to
the router/modem must be sound.

RTSPKT 0x60 is installed in autoexec.bat

I printed out all the commands for C:\NET and tried them.
A lot of errors were disclosed:

PRO0012E: Multiple protman name in PROTOCOL.INI

No SMG8003 Adapters specified in protocol.ini present

Error loading device driver SMCMAC.dos

Error 7306: driver failed to initialize

Error 7321: Network-card drivers failed to load

Error 5741: The protocole manager was unable to bind

Error 7361: IPX or NetBIOS must be running in order to load the network
services

Oh boy... have I any idea what this is all about????

And :-(( Win 98 failed to start up!

"Initialisation of VFAT-device failed. The system stopped"

Many trials to get Win98 working again with start-up diskette and the
like... "protected mode" but all failed.

Than... I remembered that MS NET changed something in config.sys and
autoexec.bat
The old settings were restored and Win98 was running again.

Any ideas how to get it working??
