There's no problem with any of that.
_IF_ you start-up an HTTP server or FTP server on the XP machine.
Let's say that the IP address of your XP machine is 192.168.1.100
Start-up an HTTP server on the XP machine with its 'front page' as....
C:\bastiaan\index.html
Now start-up Arachne on the DOS machine and enter the IP address of
the XP machine into Arachne's URL bar. (HTTP protocol)
http://192.168.1.100/
Arachne will now be displaying C:\bastiaan\index.html from the XP machine
and can link to any of the 'clickable links' in that HTML file.
The same will work via FTP
Start-up an FTP server on the XP machine with its 'root directory' as....
C:\bastiaan\pub\
(setup the FTP server to allow anonymous logins & file transfers)
Now start-up Arachne on the DOS machine and enter the IP address of
the XP machine into Arachne's URL bar. (FTP protocol)
ftp://192.168.1.100/
Arachne will now be displaying the directory listing of
C:\bastiaan\pub\ on the XP machine and can download any of the
files in that dir and can go into any of the sub dirs under pub
to download any of the files located in those dirs.
Arachne can also upload files from the DOS machine into any of those dirs.
_________________
The 'key' to this setup is that both machines must be speaking the same
language.
I understand only English... therfore when you & I speak with each other
in English, we are able to communicate with each other.
If however, you were to speak with me in say German or French....
I would not be able to understand you.
The same holds-true for Arachne.
Arachne understands HTTP & FTP for downloading files... FTP only for
uploading files.
If the XP machine is running an HTTP server... Arachne can download
files from that machine. (but she can't upload files via HTTP)
If the XP machine is running an FTP server... Arachne can download
files from that machine _and_ can upload files to that machine.
If the XP machine is simply running the windows networked drive mapping
system...... Arachne can not communicate with that machine because
Arachne does not 'speak that language'.
