Hi Jason,
that is not a silly question, but probably not so easy to answer. It
depends on which features you prefer, and how you define the term
'free'.
For example, my own Enhanced DR-DOS has some advanced features, but
according to the FSF's definition, it is technically not Free Software,
due to its license that is incompatible with GPL and other Free Software
licenses, though it is free for non-commercial use.
FreeDOS, of course, is both free software and Free Software - yes,
capitalisation is important here - and it is certainly more advanced
than MS-DOS 6.22.
RxDOS has built-in LFN support, but I think it is no longer under active
development.
I remember that Datalight's ROMDOS is also freely available now, but
again it depends on what you regard as free.
There are also some other DOS variants around, like RDOS, which all have
their own specialties.
You might find that there is no single DOS that stands out as "the best
free DOS that is currently available". ;-)
