You don't need to go that far back to find memories of an efficient postal 
service! When I was 
a little kid, we lived in an urban part of London (as distinct from a suburban 
part). My mother 
had posted a birthday card to my father just before midday. His birthday was 
the following 
day. She had to rush out and stop the postman with the afternoon delivery and 
tell him to 
take it away until the next day!
