Arghh!!!
FWIW, this was the earlier message :
Hi Sam,
Are you saying the attached text file "hj7a8001.txt"
*was* base64 encoded??? I thought that now (at last),
this problem had been overcome (our IT people have
recently upgraded that Symantec firewall stuff). I
thought/hoped the message body was now in plain text,
so that the average reader would be able to actually
read it. Can you please clarify?
Joe.

Yes, indeed it was. And why do you ask me that question? You
yourself are also a list subscriber and you should also should be
receiving copies of the messages you are sending. You can simply
examine the messages yourself to find out how they are coming
through on the list. BTW, the last two messages you posted on
the list were not seen at my end as attachments. As seen at my end
they consisted only of a text body composed mainly of garbage upper
ascii characters. See the attached if you want to have some idea of
how one of your messages looked like at my end. You should note
that the message headers say that the message was base64 stuff that
was auto converted to 8 bit by "shentel.net". This is the first time
I have ever received a base64 encoded message that my ISP had
auto-converted to 8bit. My ISP shouldn't do that. A program on my
computer is supposed to do that.
Does anyone else on this list have a mis-behaving ISP that is
auto-converting your base64 messages to 8bit?
After you decode the attachment you should save it as a file and
then take a look at it with a hex editor. You will see that except
for the message headers it is all garbage.
