Nobody > left but us "old and getting older users" I bet. I disagree. While it may be true that newbies make their first contact with Windows nowadays, there are still those who are interested in DOS even though (or perhaps because?) they do not know much about it. Linux is not being developed for "old people who are used to Un*x, so they do not want to use Windows instead" only, it aims for the same market segment as Windows. While DOS admittedly lacks the development manpower that the Linux distributors can field, it is by no means an OS for computer dinosaurs only. If all people who are interested in DOS and DOS software would know how to use it, there wouldn't probably be that many questions by newbies on DOS mailing lists, forums and newsgroups. Besides, ignoring user-friendlyness and assuming that "anybody who knows DOS is also used to doing things manually" is counter-productive. Since virtually every installer can create directories on the fly, it wouldn't be the smartest move to have Arachne require the user to do this himself.
