Arachne at FreeLists---The Arachne Fan Club!
The great queen surveyed her domain. Her followers walked to and fro
about their business within her castle walls. She was pleased to
recognise their gratitude, after all, she was a great slayer of the
enemy bugs and had been from the year 14 of the version calendar.
Her gaze drifted to her neighbours and she permitted herself a small
sigh. True they were her allies but she did not much care for their
community. There were few knights of her mettle there. Democracy (or
freedom to list as they called it) had its place, but a castle without
a leader, without a great queen? She grudgingly admitted to herself
that their castle had some minor advantages, but let anyone dare to
speak those words and she would soon vanquish them at the lists, for
her lance was sharp and she was famed for her tilting exploits.
Far beyond, lay the beautiful unbroken countryside, but wait. She
stared in disbelief. A group of stonemasons had begun fashioning a new
castle. They were flying the flag of the great spider, so how dare
they act without the queens permission. She could not declare war for
they were building on free land so a note was swiftly written and
dispatched. Surely they would recant. But no! They had made light of
her posting and were in open defiance!
The large pot was brought to the boil and the largest of the flame
throwers filled with the most evil concoction that could be imagined.
Fire!! Whether the queen ever regretted her haste is not known. She
would of course be too proud ever to make such an admission.
The way forward was now plain. Build up the walls. Keep inside that
which she held dear. Keep the benefits of her labours away from prying
eyes. True her master mason had departed, but her group could still
strive, could still achieve. And what if the new band of masons built
a better castle, why copy it! Simple enough.
The End
Editors Notes about the author (T. Preacher):
The author claims to have started writing out of a desire for justice
and fair play. Latterly he admits to having started to enjoy his
writing, perhaps too much. In fear of being seduced by the dark-side
or the writing force he is contemplating laying-down his pen and
retiring to a monastery for a period of inner contemplation.
