[arachne] Re: RUNNING ARACHNE THROUGH MOTEL SWITCHBOARDS

Arachne at FreeLists---The Arachne Fan Club!

Hi Brian,
I used to, before my hard drive faded,
have my modem set up to dial in to my internet
long distance service, provide login codes, and
dial the desired phone number. All that is done
with the modem string and modem settings....
Arachne doesn't do it.....Arachne would just call
the batch file or dialing program that would make
the connection. I wasn't using that computer to
run Arachne so I wrote a program in Basic that
setup the modem to make my long distance, internet,
phone calls. I would just point to the phone number
I wanted in my data base and the computer did all
the work. I have never tried to conenct to the internet
from a motel/hotel line so I don't know the exact procedure...
You need to get a manual/list/description of the Hayes
commands that your modem conforms to and figure
out how to set the modem up by sending the appropriate
Hayes commands to your modem. Of course, maybe someone
else knows of a program that Arachne can call that will
do it for you.
Basically, you need to send required access codes and
provide sufficient intervals between codes to allow the
outside line to connect and then run whatever internet
connection program/file that you use for connecting to your ISP.
My guess is that every motel is not the same. It would
also be wise to use an internet telephone provider to
save on long distance charges. You might even be able
to use the motel phone to establish the outside line
connection and connection to the internet phone provider
before using Arachne to dial your ISP phone number to
establish the internet connection.
