Hi,
sorry for intruding and for shamelessly advertising my own project, but
what about using the Enhanced DR-DOS kernel instead? It is based on
OpenDOS, and it features both FAT32 support and more free base RAM,
provided that there is enough upper or high mem. It also works well with
Arachne, as I can tell from first-hand experience. :-)
Regards,
Udo

Good news. I followed up on Udo's welcome intrusion and downloaded the
latest WIP binaries from his site. I then created a pa185 bootdisk
using the new kernel and command.com from OpenDOS 7.0 enhanced as follows:
1. I unzipped the OpenDOS 7.0 diskette into a clean directory.
2. I created a bootdisk by running makeboot.bat as per Udo's instructions.
3. I tested the new version of OpenDOS. Everything looked good: c: and
d: (fat32 drives) are both visible and file access looks normal.
3. I copied the contents of a pa185gpl disk into another clean directory
(c:\pa185gpl\baredisk)..
4. I deleted command.com from the baredisk directory so as not to
overwrite the new one from Udo.
5. I copied the files from the baredisk directory onto the new bootdisk.
The net effect of these steps is to produce a pa185gpl install disk
running over enhanced OpenDOS.
First test:
1. I copied my packet driver onto the new install disk and edited
autoexec.bat to load it
a:\pnppd 0x60
2. I commented out the setup stuff and added lines to transfer my
existing configuration files to the RamDisk
(the current directory set to e:\arachne where e: is the drive letter of
the ramdisk)
copy c:\arachne\*.cfg
copy c:\arachne\arachne.pck
3. I booted up and let everything proceed.
Results:
1. Arachne come up and ran flawlessly. It is blazingly fast, too.
2. My email is working perfectly, too. I don't understand this, but it
must have something to do with what's in the mail directories when
Arachne is
started or my ISP being moody.
3. The deletions that are done after Arachne is closed can be dangerous
as the delete empty directories (e.g. mail and download) which are
required. I commented them all out on the theory that the user can use
Arachne to clean up in the normal fashion, or uncomment the ones
that are safe.
Second test
1. With the packet driver load still in autoexec.bat, I uncommented the
setup lines and tried a normal setup.
Results: This worked flawlessly as well.
Gotta go now, more results later tonight.
