[arachne] PROBLEMS WITH USE OF EXTERNAL EMAIL EDITOR

Arachne at FreeLists---The Arachne Fan Club!

Sorry, due to problems with the default editor I use at VCN, this is a
partial duplicate of email I just sent from there.

Many thanks to Greg Mayman, UDO, and others for suggested solutions to
my problems with trying to set up a user defined editor in Arachne
email.

Further to my email of a few days ago, I made up a simpler starting
batch file for VDE, the editor I want to use as an external email
editor, and modified xedit.bat in accordance with the earlier
suggestions of others.

Following is a copy of C:\BAT\VDE72A.BAT, which is basically my new
email editor, and also a copy of my latest modification of
G:\ARACHARD\XEDIT.BAT

VDE72A.BAT:
EM VDE72A.BAT: TO LOAD, USE, AND UNLOAD, C:\VDE72\VDE.EXE WITH A FULL
EM COMPLIMENT OF ASSISTS INCLUDING DATETIME, EDT, VDEBLUON (key
redefinitions
EM similar to Peachtext), ERIC MEYER'S FIXCAPS TO PREVENT SHIFTS WHEN
CAPSLOCK
EM IS ON FROM PRODUCING LOWER CASE CHARACTERS.
EM SCREEN & PRINTING WIDTH 72 CHARACTERS SUITABLE FOR MOST EMAIL (THAT COPY
EM OF VDE.EXE IS SET UP WITH 72 CHARACTERS SCREEN & PRINTING WIDTH).
EM Revised to add emm386 auto before NEWKEY & other TSR'S & to add EMM386
EM OFF after all TSR'S to provide more memory for NEWKEY. BCM 22/01/2002
EM Revised BCM 07/07/2002 to add first command line of CALL NEWKEYOF to
EM ensure no recursion occurs if NEWKEY is already in use for another
EM programme.
EM THIS IS A REVISION OF VDE72.BAT, WHICH HOPEFULLY WILL WORK AS ARACHNE'S
EM EDITOR.
EM REVISED BCM 1611 18/10/2007

I do not think there is any problem with either C:\BAT\VDE72A.BAT or
with G:\ARACHARD\XEDIT.BAT.

The result was that VDE72A.BAT did, in fact, become my email editor, to
which I had full and complete access at all times. I did successfully
write a test message of 15 lines or so and succeeded in using VDE to
copy that text message to another file in another directory.

However, when I closed the VDE file in the usual manner (CTRL K X), it
closed fine but did not leave me with an email message in the Arachne
mail box that could be emailed. I think the problem may be that Arachne
needs a file name for the email message. (In an analagous situation,
when I use CTRL E in Compuserve email to create an email message,
Compuserve puts that email message into a file called CIMTMP or
something like that.) I suspect something similar needs to be done with
Arachne outgoing mail, but I am not quite sure what to do how.

If anyone has a solution to this knotty problem in mind, I would
appreciate having it.

Thank you,
Brian Murphy
