A last remark on mined: I succeeded to run it in Linux with a font
with ISO-10646-1, which is a Unicode subset. This does not provide
Chinese and Japanese, but represents a wide range of languages
including Arabian, Hebrew, Vietnames and Thai. It is nice to see all
these characters together on the screen. But this is, what all the
larger word processors in Linux can do, provided that you load the
correct keyboard drivers. In DOS, however, mimed is not very useful,
because it can display only one 8bit subset at the same time.
Midnight commander has a graphic version and a console version.
Even if you change to Unicode encoding, the console version will not
display more than one 8bit character set.
