Well, not entirely ruled out. But a message with a 50 Mb attachment
would probably be UUencoded to 80-100Mb, which could take 12 or more
hours to send when you allow for the pauses that the ISP puts in the
email uploads. It would take about 6 hours to download the email on the
other computer.
FTPing the file to my home page and downloading on the other comp would
be faster, only 3 hours for the upload and the same for the download, as
no UUcoding would be needed, although I suspect there may not be enough
space allocated by my ISP to take a 50Mb file.
As another option, I noted that PuTTY on the XP end of the exercise
seems to provide for connection via the serial port of the comp. So I
could connect the two comps with a null-modem cable, and use Telix on
the DOS comp to send the file at maximum serial port speed of 115200
bits/sec. That would take only about 1.2 hours for a 50Mb file.
Yes, there is more than one way to do it. But since I already have the
hardware set up for Ethernet, it would be nice to get it working. And
there would be no need to disconnect or dismantle anything each time I
wanted to use it.
Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.
