[arachne] Re: Links code

Arachne at FreeLists---The Arachne Fan Club!

Rob,
A long time ago, but at least in the same galaxy,
hehe, wasn't there a version of Links that WAS
compiled for DOS? I think development ended
on the DOS version at somewhere around 0.93
but I may be off. IIRC, at the time, Links was only
text mode, and only slightly more "frames friendly"
than the DOS version of Lynx (Lynx 386, which still
has no frames support, other than presenting each
frame as a link on a page). Also, Arachne was
still being compiled for "any X86" CPU, meaning
that even a 286 could, in theory, run Arachne.
Meanwhile, Links was already a DOS DPMI 32 bit
program (I could be mistaken on this, I didn't do
deep investigation, since Lynx 386 was already
up and running, and has been, for 6 years, and it
is DPMI 32 bit), requiring at least a 386 CPU and
2 meg RAM with DOS extender like CWSDPMI.
Anyway, you make a good point!
