What then is behind that "MS-DOS" icon on the desktop?

I thought that THAT was what was called the DOS box. Does it have another
name?

I never managed to get _any_ DOS program to run on an XP if it required
access to any of the hardware on the machine. But I do have several DOS
programs running from shortcut icons on the Windows desktop.
