Brian,
it is possible to combine Arachne's mail support with external
programs, e.g. you may want to use Arachne to send and receive your
message, but use a different mail client to read and compose messages
in the mail directory. You will only need to take care that the
incoming messages in the mail directory are separate files with the
extension .cnm and outgoing messages are expected to have the
extension .tbs.
The best mail client for DOS is Pegasus mail 3.50 (PMail). It is very
customizable has a capable internal editor with spell checking, an can
use other editors for composing messages, too. It is text mode, but
can use all kinds of plugins in order to display and convert
attachments (in the same way as Arachne can).
I have been PMail together with Arachne for more than 7 years and
could give you some hints to set up the program.
