So far, my favorite card for old machines has been the 3COM EtherLink III. It's 
plentiful, reliable, and the driver is easy to find on the 'net. All you have 
to do is load the packet driver before running a network application - I load 
the packet driver from my autoexec.bat file. From there, all you have to do is 
configure the wattcp.cfg file in your application's directory to specify your 
IP address, etc.
