arachne4dos @coollist.com General List ----------------

Hello from andrej

i actually think it is a pretty clever cgi program behind, for more than one
reason.

1.
The cgi-program is monitoring the "retries" of packets to resend to you, and
measuring
the time.
It will send first 32 kbyte data to your browser, just to saturate the tcp/ip
window
size (of normally 10 packets of 1500 byte), before it begins sending more data
and
measuring time to complete the next "sized" blocks, writing the "time" it took
after
each block.

It also "behaves" differently according to the dynamics of the "transfer".
It will not send you more data if it "thinks" there is no point or there are
errors or
if (maybe) will take a lot of time...

Let me get straight to the answer of your question (Destiny), of why (i think)
*your*
arachne does not go "further".
I think your tcp window size is way too high (for that program to send you more
data),
the setting is "mss" (in Wattcp.cfg)
I made tests with my arachne, this is my config:
cpu: Pentium 4, 3 GHz
ram: 1Gbyte DDR 400
network card: Realtek 8139 (100 mbit/s), using packet driver.
Office lan: linux PPP-OE connected to ADSL
ADSl speed: 4 Mbit/sec.
dos (and arachne) runs from ram disk completely
arachne mss (in Wattcp.cfg) set to 128,256,512,1024,1400,1500,3000 for to see
the
difference of "download"
---------
on different mss setings, I get a different page from
speedtest.action-computers.co.uk

First let me show the one I get using M$ Internet Explorer 6 (latest)

------ WITH INTERNET EXPLORER (and Netscape does very similar) -----------------
Downstream Speed Test
Provided by Cable-Modems.Org
This is a completely unscientific test of the downstream bitrate from this
server in
London UK to your browser. Many many internet miles are traveled, so this kind
of test
can not tell very much about how your local ISP performance is. So please do
not take
the results too seriously.

Testing...

Test 1: 32 KB loaded in 0.3 secs at 786 kbit/sec
Test 2: 64 KB loaded in 0.1 secs at 3876 kbit/sec
Test 3: 128 KB loaded in 0.3 secs at 3726 kbit/sec
Test 4: 256 KB loaded in 0.6 secs at 3660 kbit/sec
Test 5: 512 KB loaded in 1.2 secs at 3388 kbit/sec
Test 6: 1024 KB loaded in 2.3 secs at 3503 kbit/sec
Test 7: 1024 KB loaded in 2.4 secs at 3388 kbit/sec
Test 8: 1024 KB loaded in 2.4 secs at 3384 kbit/sec

Average: 4064 KB loaded in 9.7 secs at 3359 kbit/sec

Notice that the test will be skewed if compression is used on the link. Cable
modems
and DSL modems does not presently use compression.

Continue in the Cable-Modems.Org toolbox !
---------------------------------------------
Notes here:
1. they sent me 4 Mega bytes alltogether.
2. I get more tests,

NOW WITH ARACHNE

Now with arachne it is different, and it depends on the "mss" setup in the (say
Wattcp.cfg)
typicals of what I get:
---- mss=128 (note, way too low) ---
test 1: 32KB in 1.9 sec @ 134 kbit/sec
test 2: 64KB in 4.8 sec @ 108 kbit/sec
test 3: 64KB in 5.0 sec @ 103 kbit/sec
average 160 kb in 11.6 sec @ 110 kbit/sec
-----------------------------------------

---- mss=256 (note, low) ---
test 1: 32KB in 1.2 sec @ 210 kbit/sec
test 2: 64KB in 2.5 sec @ 202 kbit/sec
test 3: 64KB in 2.6 sec @ 197 kbit/sec
test 4: 64KB in 2.5 sec @ 202 kbit/sec
average 224 kb in 8.9 sec @ 202 kbit/sec
-----------------------------------------

---- mss=512 (note, this was "the original setup" ) ---
test 1: 32KB in 1.0 sec @ 249 kbit/sec
sometimes (occasionaly) I get the following 2, but *never completed the *whole*
test
test 2: 64KB in 2.5 sec @ 202 kbit/sec
test 3: 64KB in 2.5 sec @ 206 kbit/sec
test 4: 64KB in 2.5 sec @ 203 kbit/sec
note, the page never displays more, i mean the rest
-----------------------------------------

---- mss=1024 (note, twice than "the original setup" ) ---
sometimes (occasionaly) I get only 1 line, but *never completed the *whole* test
test 1: 32KB in 1.0 sec @ 265 kbit/sec
note, the page never displays more, i mean the rest
-----------------------------------------

---- mss=1400 (note, this is considered "industry standard" ) ---
very rarely I get only 1 line, but *never completed the *whole* test
test 1: 32KB in 1.0 sec @ 261 kbit/sec
note, the page never displays more, i mean the rest
also note, arachne "loads" 24 kbyte from "there", but "they" do not send the
"end" of
the page.
-----------------------------------------
NB, I have "Multitasking Yes" in arachne.cfg, and if I set this to NO, makes no
difference (with this test)

My conclusions:
1. on my machine, i get the "best" out of arachne if I use mss of 256
2. although my machine runs on 3 GHz, arachne "loads" 12 times slower than
windows (I
use IE or netscape).
This, to my opinion is because of lack of multitasking in DOS, since arachne
*will*
try to render (as a foreground process) while the html (page, not images) are
still
being downloaded.
3. There *IS* a definite reason of why mss *was set* to 512 in Wattcp.cfg, but
I do
not know why. My opinion is that this is done to "optimize" arachne in the way
it
"handles" the internal multitasking, aka if my arachne tells the "server" to
send
shorter packets, i will have time to "process" them while I am rendering too.
(BTW, for Joe da Silva), this may answer your problems with the NE2000 cards
you had
last weekend.

To watch:
if your machine runs slower, and you have a fast connection, you may be missing
packets (resulting with retry) so you can try to set mss to 256.
(BTW, for Joe da Silva again), this may answer your problems with the NE2000
cards you
had last weekend.

regards to all, and sorry for the long email
