What I do is to keep the next one that _will_ exist in my 'hotlist'
I'll click that link and an error occurs.... until a new post is made.
Then that post displays and of-coarse if any others also exist, the link
at the top of the page for 'Date Next' will be active.
I then link-on-through to say 95, 96, 97... etc....
When I reach the most recent and have read it... I then update my
'hotlist' to point to one post higher and now linking to that one will
result in an error page until a new post is made.
Sort-of an unorthodox method of doing things.....
But then again...... I have always been quite unorthodox. ;-)
That's why I took-over the Arachne Web Browser for DOS project
in the first place.
In this day & age...
what could be more unorthodox than a full-featured graphical web
browser that runs 100% in DOS (no windows, no Linux... just DOS).

From what I could determine....
The new format did not allow for linking to the next post
or previous post which was made by date... but rather to simply
a different thread or the next or previous post in the same thread.
At this link...... http://www.freelists.org/archive/arachne/recent
The posts are not arranged by date... but rather are grouped by thread.
The post at the top of the list is not the most recent made ... but
rather is the most recent made in that thread.
By visiting that link tomorrow at say 3pm..... I will not be able to
determine which posts were made between right now and 3pm tomorrow.
I would not even be able to determine whether or not _any_ new posts
had been made at-all.
So, if the archive format will no longer be as it has been with each
successive post being numbered in chronologic order......
I'll need to turn-off 'vacation mode' in my settings and begin receiving
the posts via email again.
When I turned-on 'vacation mode' four years ago and left it on permanently,
I figured that it was not only helping me by reducing the in-flux of
emails to my inbox, but that it was also helping you by reducing the
needed outgoing email bandwidth.
