Hiya Gang!

Well, to sort of answer why dialup access is less prone to being
attacked, hacked and phracked...most dialup ISPs use "dynamic
IP Addressing"...which means you get a different IP address assigned
each time you connect to your ISPs PPP server. With boradband/
highspeed, most of these IPS use "static IP Addressing", which just
means your IP address is the SAME each time you connect, if you
ever do disconnect. A moving target (dynamic IP address) is a bit
harder to hit than a stationary (static IP address) one. So most of
the phreakers and crackers go for static addresses. The easiest way
to obtain these, by sending THOUSANDS of spam email with a
phony "click here to unsubscribe or remove your address" link...
the message headers reveal your IP addess. Other tools include
ping, JavaScript in popup browser windows and "phishing" which
is just getting gullible users to divulge information via false means.
Dialup is not immune from attack, but just a little harder to hit.
Don't let popups run without knowing the actual domain of origin...
use popup blockers or set scripting to prompt user before running.
Don't reply to spam emails, and never, ever, ever click on hyperlinks
in emails that ask for some sort of account information unless you
know in advance the entity is sending an email to you...such as a
list server for confirmation!

Just a few handy little tips for dealing with malicious wannabees!
