Hiya Lists!
I've also sent copies to the Freelists group as well as my Internet
In DOS group regarding an email client for DOS I've been testing out.
While it is not "new", it isn't very well known. I've been playing
with a full-featured DOS email client called NuPop, from Northwestern
University. Somewhat similar to Popmail PC, BUT, also different. The
setup is almost the same in regards to your DNS, Netmask, Gateways
and servers, but it also allows for assigning various "viewers" for
file types...ie, Arachne for HTML!! It decodes Mime Base64 somewhat,
but it doesn't do the UTF 8 stuff. No big deal there, most of the
mail I get with UTF 8 is spam anyway. Many of you may use Pegasus
mail for DOS...I haven't, so I can't speak to it. Nupop takes up
a little over 2 megs of hard drive space with a full installation.
After installation, a user could get rid of unneeded/unwanted files,
I guess. There are executables for WATTCP (for EPPPD, not for WZPPP)
as well as LAN and regular ethernet. Also, there is a "Real Mode"
executable for machines without extended memory (8088s, XTs). I have
been using NuPop to "clear" the junk emails that Arachne, as well as
NetMail DOS seem to "choke" on...the ones with the garbage headers
and subject lines. If someone is interested, let me know and I can
make NuPop available for download. I'm starting to really like it
more than PopMail PC, and have created a small OOK file to call NuPop
from Arachne.
Guess that's about all for now...oh, I might mention why I like NuPop
as opposed to PopMail PC...NuPop doesn't put my email server as part
of my "sender" name! This allows me to send using my ISPs server to
these lists without the mail returned due to non-subscribed user!
I haven't tested "Authenticated SMTP" yet.
C U L8R!
