Arachne is a web browser, email client, text editor, file manager
functions, accepts almost any web client such as ftp, telnet. Used as a
program shell to start applications. And anything else the users can dream
up.

Most computer groups are relatively anomymous, this being the least I have
encountered. The focus is on computing, not on who one was or is.

You certainly chose the most difficult method to have 2 operating systems
on 1 box. Your current install assumes that 1 operating system must utilize
the entire hard disk, therefore for 2 OS you have 2 disks but only 1 running
at a time. You should have it setup:
First hard disk set as master, second hard disk set as slave, both running
all the time. Or use a removable tray for second. First disk will be for
operating systems, second for backup.
Create 2 primary partitions and 1 or more logical extended partitions.
Install dos or XP first. Unaware which would have to install first, perhaps
another on list would know. Install a boot manager (menu upon startup to
choose between various operating systems). Install the second system in
other primary partition. Setup boot manager to access both. Some boot
managers will hide/unhide partitions, others can boot dos beyond 2 gig
limit.
What version of dos do you use? XP should read the FAT dos partition. Dos
will read the XP one (probably need a NTFS file system driver but they are
available. Now you can read files from either OS with system files being on
separate drives.
Second hard disk use a backup drive, create same partitions( can be
logical) and backup files from dos and XP.

Why would you need a parallel switch when the zip drive is attached to the
same computer? A para port card would not help XP as it controls file
permissions through external ports. A driver is required to access the
parallel port. These are available both commercial and free. The other
option which you did not mention is USB memory sticks? Do you have usb port
on your computer? In a couple weeks will have access to an XP machine and
if Greg M has yet to transfer files, will setup a dos and XP machine and do
the parallel port null cable routine.
Ask away on other questions. Plenty of knowledge among members on this
list.
