Greg,
I now think I have your problem with slow speed figured out!
After examining your AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files, it
would appear that you are NOT using any type of disk caching
software, such as SmartDrive if using MS DOS. Other disk
cache utilities that work great with Arachne are NWCache and
NCache. So, if using MS DOS, add a line to your AUTOEXEC.BAT
to load the disk caching of SmartDrive with similar command:
LH C:\DOS\SMARTDRV 2048
This will load the running portion of smartdrive into upper
or high memory, and set aside 2 megs of extended memory for
the cache itself. Enable write as well as read caching on
your working drive, assumed to be C: By default it should
be on already.
Next, reduce the "BUFFERS=30,0" statement in CONFIG.SYS to
BUFFERS=10,0
Save both altered configuration files, and reboot. Now, start
Arachne and check your email index speed!
This should be a good time to point out something about Arachne...
All versions I have ever ran operate at optimal speed with some
sort of disk cache enabled for write/read to the hard drive!
