For those interested, one of the crucial passages from the Declaration :-=

?Yet if he (Bruce) should give up what he has begun, and agree to make us=

or our kingdom subject to the King of England or the English, we should e=
xert
ourselves at once to drive him out as our enemy and a subverter of his ow=
n
rights and ours, and make some other man who was well able to defend us o=
ur
King; for, as long as but a hundred of us remain alive, never will we on
any conditions be brought under English rule. It is in truth not for glor=
y,
nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom - for that
alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself.?

Extract from the Declaration of Arbroath 1320

Now is that a good bit or not? the bit "for as long as but a hundred of u=
s
remain alive etcetc"

A full translation can be found at

for bear in mind this Declaration was written in Latin, and sent to the P=
ope
of the day as a petition. Those who consider they have a Scottish connect=
ion
might like to check the translation where at the preamble, the list of Sc=
ottish
noblemen, Earls and Barons, includes some of the most famous Scottish fam=
ily
names, still honoured almost 700 years later.

(sound of bagpipes playing lament in evening air, smell of heather and pe=
at
fires, taste of a dram of a good single malt)

Regards

Mel
