On the other hand, Linux manages to achieve a respectable 90-93% of
that theoretical maximum. I really ought to get a packet sniffer to
see if Arachne does something strange.

Again, there is no noticeable difference.

It seems my harddisk cache is just as effective as a RAM disk, so the
harddisk speed is not the limiting factor.
