DR-DOS is an MS-DOS-compatible OS, and excels in that role. It comes
with networking software (Personal Netware Lite) and supports
Multitasking. It also has some commands that are either extended
versions of the MS-DOS ones (like XDIR) or only exist in DR-DOS. It
features good memory management and has a very low Conventional Memory
footprint compared to MS-DOS. It is also one of only two DOSes that I
know of that support DPMS which allows some drivers to be loaded in XMS
memory instead of precious Conventional or Upper memory. The command
interpreter of DR-DOS supports Long Filenames.
The standard kernel of the last freely available version, 7.03, does not
support large harddisks or FAT32, but it can be replaced with the
Enhanced DR-DOS kernel to support this, which also further improves the
memory management.
This overview barely scratches the surface; if you want to learn more
about it, I suggest that you visit Club DR-DOS:
