I should also have said that I run MS-DOS 6.20, with 64 MB RAM.

Maybe you don't have the problem because you have compiled it while
in DR-DOS ?
Differences between various DOS flavours have been a problem with not
only various Arachne distros, but also other stuff - including some of
mine. Sometimes it is even due to the different way command.com and
4DOS behave.
