   And I wrote one for myself, for the same purpose, also no ANSI.SYS needed. 
That was years ago, but it still works.

   And MS-DOS 6.20 is booted to a boot-menu on my system, in colour right from 
the beginning when no drivers are loaded at all.

   Looks like there are quite a few ways to do it.  :)
