Glenn, if you had downloaded and tried out that one you would have
recognized that it is not DOS-based.

That one is a linux live CD which includes the linux program "Kapersky
Antivirus"

It boots a linux operating system from the CD and it runs in a ram
drive.

It is designed to scan only one's DOS and/or Windoze partition(s) for
viruses and malware.

I downloaded the iso file and I burned the live CD and I tried it out on
my dual boot WinXP and Ubuntu linux machine after booting to the CD.

BTW, one of several alternative methods to scan for viruses in my WinXP
partition would be to boot to Ubuntu and then use F-Prot for linux to
scan for viruses on my WinXP partition. Doing that works just fine for
me.

The Kapersky anti-virus running on the live CD did not work very well
for me. It detected about a dozen phishing emails whose presence on
my hard drive I had been already aware of. I'm not worried about those
phishing attacks because I never fall for them. I just make a point of
leaving some of them on my hard drive for the purpose of testing the
effectiveness of various anti-virus and anti-spyware programs. Although
the Kapersky anti-virus did a good job in detecting the phishing
attacks, it failed to complete the scanning of the entire WinXP
partition. It would scan only 63% of the partition, and then appear to
continue to be running, even though no progress was seen to be happening
in the progress bar and no increases were happening in the number
indicating the percentage done. I did this twice, letting the program
run and run for a couple of hours each time. Each time, same results.
