Rob (and all),
What an interesting and helpful discussion. Thank you all for the information. When I first started with computers, I was on DOS 2.1 and got infected by a shareware disk (remember 5.25 in floppy disks?). You could only get them at vendors. It infected every floppy I owned. I got f-prot, and cleaned it out. I never thought about running a 16 bit system might just be immune. That would be great.

I haven't run arachne for a while (it used to be the only thing I ran), but was also wondering if it can work with DSL. I no longer have a dialup modem. I suppose that could be gotten.

Michael,
Most viruses won't run on a 16-bit dos system, but they can run in a
32-bit system. BTW, I've dealt with Linux systems infected with rootkits.
The M$ migrants to Linux had no clue they were infected, as properly
built rootkits will not allow any of their files or services to be
detected. Not with 'ps' 'ls' or any other command, nor will they showup
in the logs. They have the "I run Linux so I can't be hacked or infected" syndrome. A sure sign of a person conditioned in M$ DOS or Windo$e.
Below are some links to a port of clamav for DOS. These are version 95,
the Linux version is at least 97. Clamav is an excellent AV, and is used
on many mail servers. If for no other reason, any system with a virus,
either active or passive is a harbour that can infect someone elses
system, like say a bank or hospital or friend. Even if you have the
"It can't happen to me." attitude, at least cleanup for the sake of others.

In that light, I'd like to know what DOS users do for an AV. There used to be one, but I don't know of any available now. Is this not a problem with DOS?

Hi L.D., Sam,

These are Windows users. For most of them, disinfecting their own
machines and then re-setting to a clean DNS server may be beyond their
capabilities. But it will generate some income for those who do know how.
