OK Greg,
Number one I meant the hash '#' as the prompt, don't
type it. Two, try this,

<#>cp sc.tgz sc ENTER
<#>chmod +x sc ENTER
<#>./sc ENTER

Those are three commands in a row, the '<#>' just means your
command prompt. The 'cp' command means 'copy'. For links2 you
need to be in the GUI, it seems it's been compiled only with
an 'X' driver. In the GUI, open a xterm, which is like a dosbox,
in windo$e9x. Type 'links -g' at the prompt. Use 'startx' for the
GUI. BTW I'm positive you have gzip, but I really need to run to
work right now, more later. Oh yah, just lurk on the BL list for a
while, read others problems and get comfortable.

decompressing files. This may sound weird, but take your
'sc.tgz' file and in the directory it is in do
'#./sc.tgz' at the prompt. See what happens. Notice the
dot and slash ahead of sc.tgz.

Do I type the "#"? or is that the prompt you get? I get /<#>

Anyway I tried it with and without....

#./sc.tgz nothing happens, just the prompt on the next line.

../sc.tgz "Permission denied"

Also what color are your *.tgz files? BL aka BasicLinux uses
console colors so that may provide a clue.

White.

Try just 'gzip ENTER' at the prompt too. What do you get?

It went to a new line, no prompt. The screen was echoing what I
typed from the keyboard. I couldn't quit it, no matter what I
tried, so I did a ctrl-alt-del.

Try just gunzip at the prompt. What do you get?

"Compressed data not read from terminal. Try -f to force it."

Are you getting a coredump?

Not that I've noticed.

Do you see any file such as links2.core or
sylpheed.core?

No. "find links2.core" and "find sylpheed.core" both returned
nothing. A quick check through some of the directories didn't
turn them up.

What version of BL are you using?

3.40, the hard disk version.

Lastly there are two versions of links, the text only,
and links2 which is both text and graphical. I wonder
if you have both binaries installed??? Look in both
/usr/bin and /usr/local/bin.

I couldn't find "links" anywhere I looked, and "find links" gave
"no such file...".

Links2 is in usr/local/bin

To use it graphically you do '#links -g' Notice the '-g' option.

Nothing happened except I was returned the prompt. Are you sure
about that leading "#"? I tried it without and got

Could not initialize any graphics driver. Tried the following drivers
x:
Can't open display "(null)".

At the prompt do '#links -g -mode 1' What do you get?

With the "#", nothing, just new line and the prompt.

Entering "links -g -mode1" returned "Unknown option -mode1".

You really have me wondering here, I wish I could sit at your
computer for a while!!!

So do I. And I wish I could try one thing and write it up in my
reply without having to reboot every time to go from one to the
other..

BL should not provide this much trouble.
You really should subscribe to the BasicLinux mailinglist.
They can be very helpful.

I am subscribed. But I hesitate to ask as I don't know what I'm
asking for.... except for it to work.....

Aw, what the heck... what have I got to lose....
