Frank,

There are, in fact, ****thousands***** of Unix commands. Nobody knows
all of Unix. It's endless. Any computer geek going back to the 80's
could and often did develop new commands to solve particuler problems.

Ah, yes. Taking the broader definition of command, there are thousands of
commands for many, if not most, OSs. In fact, by that definition,
sed.exeon the berkley site I referenced, is in fact, a DOS command.

I thought it was implied by my use of 'typical *nix' system and 'cli', I
meant the set of commands that usually comes installed with *nix by
default. And excluding those that rise to the level of application.

These are typically found in /bin. For example, the system which I'm using
now(xubuntu edgy) has ~100 such 'commands'.

And the 40 listed here: http://www.openetwork.com/berk.html represent a nice
chunk to get started with.
