"Ass" has the short a as in "apple", and "arse" has the long a as in "hard". Grass and pass have the long a as in "hard" but without the "r" sound. In fact the "r" sound is usually not used in words like hard, arse, etc. OTOH, if one is "putting on the jam" in a pseudo-upper-class-British accent, one may pronounce ass with the long a. Accents vary in different parts of Aus, but not as much as in Usa, and certainly a _lot_ less than in parts of Uk. . ,-./\ from Greg Mayman, in Adelaide, South Australia . / \ "Queen City of The South" 34:55 S 138:36 E . \_,-*_/ . v homepage http://users.tpg.com.au/gmone/index.htm Arachne at FreeLists -- Arachne, The Web Browser/Suite for DOS and Linux --
