Hi Ted,

when trying to load Arachne in dos it comes up with the message
insufficient base memory to run .
You could be a candidate for my 'alternate' version of Arachne, there's
over 100K more free memory available, I run with 230K free, vs. 170K
free with the 'J3' core, however my core has no hidden memory
requirements,
so you can use every bit of the free memory and run just fine.
It's also quite a bit faster than the std. distro. However, there are
incomatibilies, especialy with keywords. Also, there's no 'setup'
(though
almost none is needed) and also no 'options' pages so you have to
edit arachne.cfg by hand. A few guys on the list are familiar with it,
eg. Bastiaan, Eric, Glenn, Vladimir, so they can give you an opinion.
Hi Ted,
Yes, the alternative version from Ray does not have any problems with
lack of memory :-))
I too have a lack of memory with the standard Arachne (1.90) and I
have to quit Norton Commander to free memory AND to switch off the
CD-players.
Perhaps that might help.
BTW: I am interested how you managed to connect via the PCMCIA slot.
At the moment I am still struggeling with my desktop machine
to connect to ADSL internet and after that succeeds I will try to
connect with Arachne with 1 or 2 of my laptops that does not have a
local area network port. Just PCMCIA slots.

Hi Bastiaan,
Apologies for not responding earlier,
have not been well enough to list what actually I have here on the
Thnkpad 390x.
to connect this installation of windowsfor workgroups to Broadband.
So the hardware,
plugged into the pcmcia slot is a Netgear 16bit 10/100Mbps fast
ethernet model no FA411' pcmcia adapter
From there is a cat 5 line to the Linksis router into which is plugged
my laptop , my sons laptop and my better half's desktop. My son and I
use Linux on our other computers, and her indoors uses XP pro.
The software on the dos machine is from the accompaning Netgear
resource cd no 4.
On that is a driver for windows called NDIS 2.0.1 written in 2001.
thats installed at boot up in dos at
C:\ C;|windows\net start,
So on switch on the dos drivers
for the card are DEVICE=C:\CARDWIZ\CARDXTND.sys
and others too long to list right now but can do later if youd like to
see the entries..
When the autoexec.bat and config.sys have loaded both lights on the
netgear card are on.
So we are connected to the router and the net.
So then I go into win and open opera or Netscape 3 and im on line.
When I type mem at the C promt i get
conventional 640k
used 202K
free 438K
Largest exec prog 438K
total expanded 33,152
total extended 32,752.
If I try and free up more conventional memory by running memmaker it
crashes the programme.
If I try and load Arachne it reports im short of low memory by 41384 bytes.
So im not able to start Arachne as of this time.
Tho I can go into WFWGS and and im fine.
Hope thisis of some interest
Ted.
