You could be a candidate for my 'alternate' version of Arachne, there's
over 100K more free memory available, I run with 230K free, vs. 170K
free with the 'J3' core, however my core has no hidden memory requirements,
so you can use every bit of the free memory and run just fine.
It's also quite a bit faster than the std. distro. However, there are
incomatibilies, especialy with keywords. Also, there's no 'setup' (though
almost none is needed) and also no 'options' pages so you have to
edit arachne.cfg by hand. A few guys on the list are familiar with it,
eg. Bastiaan, Eric, Glenn, Vladimir, so they can give you an opinion.
Hi Ted,
Yes, the alternative version from Ray does not have any problems with
lack of memory :-))
I too have a lack of memory with the standard Arachne (1.90) and I have
to quit Norton Commander to free memory AND to switch off the CD-players.
Perhaps that might help.
BTW: I am interested how you managed to connect via the PCMCIA slot.
At the moment I am still struggeling with my desktop machine
to connect to ADSL internet and after that succeeds I will try to
connect with Arachne with 1 or 2 of my laptops that does not have a
local area network port. Just PCMCIA slots.
Regards, Bastiaan
