Greg,
I have XP on my "new" Dell Inspiron 510S, nope...no DOS in XP. WinXP is based
on Win NT. If you want a DOS, you have to partition the hard drive and install
one in it's own partition, then use a boot manager if you desire to boot into
it.
Just like you would not expect to find DOS on a Ubuntu Linux machine.

Interesting, but I've got XP....

This says that it can't be done, and while the DOS-window can run most
16-bit software, it won't let them access any of the hardware.
Sheeeesh! Gates's boys (and girls) are making it harder and harder for
us dinosaurs!
Ah, well, there are still some DOSes around that can be made to work
with some of the newer computers....
Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.
