[arachne] Backmail DOS Program

Arachne at FreeLists---The Arachne Fan Club!

Hi all,
Here's hoping for a successful and productive New Year for all ... and
for the development of Arachne GPL.

I ran across an old (c. 1989) DOS program called Backmail. It handles
peer-to-peer mail and file transfer between phone numbers - both single
or multiple numbers - at a periodic rate set by each individual user.
Backmail operates in a background mode based on parameters set in an
easy-to-modify config file.

Backmail is shareware, but I can't find the owner. The version I found (v
1.1) could handle modem rates up to 9600, but most of the modems
supported are no longer available on the market. Obviously, it could be
configured to work at much faster rates, but I also couldn't find any
source code to modify. Too bad, because Backmail looks like it would be a
perfect application to use with Arachne. I suspect that the
authors/owners have long since given up hope that they will make any more
money from the program. Quite possibly, they might be willing to donate
the source code to a good (Arachne) cause.

Questions ...

Does anybody have any experience with this old program? Would any of you
telecom gurus be interested in putting Backmail to the test? I have the
zip file if anybody is interested.

Bob ~
