Arachne at FreeLists---The Arachne Fan Club!
David,
Glad you're getting things worked out. One note,
I wouldn't surf the 'net with those privilages.
Svgalib, doesn't allow user privilages for security
reasons. I would SUID the arachne binary with the
command 'chmod u+s arachne-svgalib'. You can do this
as root after the command 'sudo -i', which will give
you root access to chmod the binary. This BTW will
work with any app that uses svgalib, such as seejpeg,
zgv, or links for examples. You should be able to
have a ~/user/.arachne directory then and use arachne
as the user. Let me know how it goes.

Finally I could see the error output using:
arachne > output.log
and it appears that arachne try to read /root/.arachne/toolbar.tb
But /root/.arachne directory is non exsistence. The solution was I
copied /home/user/.arachne to /root, and then run arachne with sudo.
After that it could run as user.
The problem with ubuntu is we have no root user and we use sudo
instead. So, I did not do the first step:
1) login as root
but replace it with sudo isntead.
But the unexpected effect was /root/.arachne directory was not created
and it created in user directory instead. May be if I use su it would
work as expected.
