You're having a problem that I think was the same
thing that was happening to me. I've since gotten
a different computer and upgraded my system and
haven't installed arachne on it, but when I was
using slack11.0, glennmcc posted changes to
libvga.config that solved those problems. I'm not
sure I still have backups of that file. IIRC, had
to uncomment these lines in /etc/vga/libvga.config.

# VesaText

I could run arachne without sudo, only on the first run it needed
sudo. It appears that the installation is completed only after first
run of arachne, as also pointed out in the message during install.

My suggestion are:

1. For first run as root, read .arachne directory in the user home
directory and not in the /root directory, as the installation put the
..arachne in the installation user

or

Put the .arachne directory in the root directory instead of user home directory.

2. Better still, complete the installation and do not wait until the first run


Now I have another problem, when I quit arachne I could not get back
to prompt, it just give me blank screen. I tried to issue command but
it did not response. But the keyboard is still responseive, I could
restart using ctrl+alt+del. The weird thing is I could not get to
another console using alt+F2, but I could remote login from other
computer using ssh.

I still do not have time to check all the log yet.
