I got Arachne to run in Slax Linux (= Slackware 12.1) with an older
packet of svgalib from Slackware 7.1.

The Slackware 12 distributions contain a utility (svga-helper) that
attempts to install a module not fitting into the provided kernel.
Comments in libvga.config, however tell, that you may deactivate this
utility with the keyword 'NoHelper'. This worked also in the
libvga 1.4.3.

Customizing libvga.config without knowing what you do, is probably a
source of big trouble. But selecting Vesa seems to be a good selection
for different video chips, similar as the setting PS2 for mouse.
