Arachne at FreeLists---The Arachne Fan Club!
Hi list,
I created an offline HTML presentation in Czech language
on a boot CD with Arachne. The CD image (5.6 MB) can be
downloaded here:

The contents of the presentation will probably not be interesting for
anybody on the list as it is entirely in Czech. Anyway, the boot
disk may be inspiring for people who want to distribute RAM-only
versions of Arachne.
When I looked for a legal way of distributing DOS with this
(not commercial) presentation, I had to realize that
DR-DOS/OpenDOS crashed on almost every newer PC I could find.
The memory manager EMM386 coming with DR-DOS obviously does
not support newer computer memory. Running without XMS was not
really satisfying, QEMM sometimes worked, but I suppose it is not
free. I ended up with FreeDOS that has improved a lot since
the time, I installed it with dosemu on my Linux system. FreeDOS seems
to boot on any system, even on the latest PCs. In some areas FreeDOS
is superior to any other DOS and Windows, e.g. internationalization.
There are, however, two things which are incompatible with (MS-)DOS
and may cause some trouble when replacing MS-DOS with FreeDOS:
- In MS-DOS the command line
drive:\path\file\
causes a change of drive. This undocumented feature of MS-DOS
does not work in FreeDOS.
- Unfortunately the subst command does not work with RAM-drives
and only very badly with hard disk drives.
Regards,
Christof Lange
