Just now tested it to confirm what I already knew.....

That is the exact error one gets when attempting to run Arachne
in a terminal window inside of a Linux Xserver GUI desktop.

Did you not see see item 7 at http://www.glennmcc.org/aralinux/ ?

7) not in X, nor in a terminal emulator in X, but ONLY at the CLI...
   to start Arachne v1.93;Linux, simply type.... arachne <enter>

Soooooo..... get out of X and back to the CLI
