glennmcc,
I would would highly recommend you turn off 'root login',
as this can be a severe security risk. You can 'su' or'su -'
once logged in. A good rootkit checker such as rkhunter or
chkroootkit would give warnings of this. I'm assuming if
you are running Slackware, you are using OpenSSH, so in
/etc/ssh/sshd_config change the line
'PermitRootLogin Yes' to
'PermitRootLogin no'
Then restart your sshd daeman with
'/etc/rc.d/rc.sshd restart' at the commandline.
BTW if you have 'screen' on your 'nix box, you can easily
run multiple programs on the remote host.

Tested and approved.....
They both work perfectly to login to my SlackWare Linux v11
machine running 'sshd'
These are photos of my DOS machine screen logged into the SW machine

In all cases I was presented with the prompt to enter the password for
user 'pub' after-which I was logged-in just as if I had done it on the
Linux computer's keyboard.
While I was logged-in... I also ran the Linux 'lynx browser'
and the 'links browser' from the DOS Arachne/SSH interface(s)
I then logged-in as root and issued the 'reboot'
which of-course rebooted to Linux machine
I then logged-in yet again as root and issued the 'halt' command
to shut-down the Linux machine.
