Brian:

Here is the method I use for composing an email with Arachne and by
using an external editor:

First I fill out only the header info (To, CC, From, Subject) by
using the default built-in editor. Then I save the message.

Next I go into my outbox and and I edit the saved message by adding the
message body by using my external editor. Then I save that and it is
ready to send.

Works for me.
