As Udo said, if this also fails, it is time to check the two components that 
you have blindly trusted so far: Your networking card and its packet driver.
As I was still able to connect the net via my Baslinux on the same box, I 
started looking at the packet driver. I have as before all the time used the 
driver supplied with Arachne, the ne2000.com from november 22, 1993.
Found in nwclient which I once just installed as I put Drdos 7.3 on the box an 
newer and especially much bigger ne2000.com. Date April 1, 1996.
Size 23509 kb against 8693 kb for the Arachne variant.
Used it and was at once on the web with Arachne ;).
Boy, was that an time consuming exercise ;)
