I can even power-down the modem and power back up again later
and the connection is re-established with a new IP address
fully automatically.
Almost there!
It makes me sick that you need JS to just get a connection.
Or that you even need to worry about any of that. Isn't it possible
to get a list of the exact communications that are needed? If
we knew what sort of information was to be sent back and forth,
it would be easy to create a script, rather like an ftp logon
that you see in the ftp.log.
Yes Ray, I am sick of all of this! I became sick the moment my provider
informed me of the change to ADSL.
More sicknes when the box with the modem arrived. Just a modem, a
splitter for the telephone line, a booklet with hardly any information
and a CD (windows only of course) and the helpline telephone number at a
charge of 1 euro per minute... and I know they have no technical
knowledge at this helpline.
First I have to change the telephone connection/wireing in my house...
that means breaking up the floor in the living room :-(
I have not undertaken this... a loose wire runs through the living room
when I connect to the internet.
The CD does not contain any drivers, just a wizard to install the new
internet settings... windows of course.
Installation on the XP-machine went fine. Installation of the win98/DOS
machine was a terrible job to get the LAN-card at work.
Both machines did not have a networkcard installed... so I had to go to
the shop to get them.
The first one had a CD... but no drivers on DOS. The second one was much
better and had several drivers on the accompagnying CD :-)

Yes, I have been thinking of a way to spy on the connection between the
computer and the modem. If we would be able to see what codes are send
to the modem we would be able to simulate them with Arachne.
I have a program to spy on a RS232 connection... you need a second
computer to register all the trafic on the RS232 line.
Would be nice to do this on the RJ45? connection as well...

Anyway, apart from becomming sick of all this... we learn from the
problems so probably we can drag Arachne through the 21 century :-)(
