Well, by golly!

Thank you listers!  It sure warms a fellow's heart and soul
to know that their profession is trusted and respected.  In 
my over 25 years of experience, the "general public" has 
been, on the whole, quite appreciative of our services.  My
biggest complaint has always been that pharmacists are
under-utilized, due primarily to some sort of "turf-protection"
mechanism in the medical field.  Pharmacists were rated 
"number one trusted professionals" for many years...I used
to attribute that to the fact we rarely, if ever, charged a fee for
advice, recommendations, and referrals.  In the last 6 or 7 
years, though, something has changed.  Other healthcare
professionals have been granted "prescribing rights", while
the professionals with the most education, training and 
certification in the use of prescription medications continues
to be looked upon as only the one that puts the pills in the
bottle with a label for use, maybe checking to make sure
interactions don't occur, bill prescription insurance for the
pills, and take the money for the prescription to the bank.
Hopefully, I and other pharmacists, can break the stereotype 
and demonstrate to the medical community that we are 
capable of determining treatment options.  As for the money
part, at the current rates pharmacies get around $2 per Rx 
from many insurance companies, and as Eric noted the big
pharmaceutical manufacturers make a fortune.  Insurance
companies also make a good income from premiums being
charged.
Well, I probably went into more detail than necessary...but I
did want to express my sincerest gratitude to all those that 
appreciate their pharmacist for more than just a pill counter!!
