"Well, it's about time," muttered Shamus as he stripped off his jacket,
balled it up, and flung it in a corner. He zipped up his old pilot's suit,
which was nearly entirely covered with the patches of his old sponsors, some
of them companies that went bankrupt over a decade ago.

After donning battered fingerless gloves, he then hauled himself up into the
cockpit of his Iguana, cursing all the whole about how cramped the hatch
was. He buttoned up and went though the "pre-flight" checklist, casting an
experienced and critical eye over the myriad dials and displays. That
complete, he walked his Gear through a simple routine, checking the range of
movement of the joints and actuators. The final check complete, Shamus
stood, armored fists on armored hips, waiting for the go ahead.
