Dear Friends of Christian renewal, This time in reporting from our Community Hosanna I am going to focus on our year end appeal for support to enable a continuation and development of all our programs and ministries in Moscow. It will be in two parts: (1) I will report on the status of the appeal and that is important but I would like to say some words first about the significance of what we are doing and to represent it by the thought of the 'Springtime of the Church' this is a phrase perhaps first used of the taize Community as a sign of Spring, and Fr Michael Plekon in his book "Living Icons" says of Hosanna that it is one of the signs of Spring... You know it came, our community, out of a sort of Springtime in Russia of hope , of course of Fr Men and so on, and of the opening of society and the sense that Christians could come together and together open the way to the future... I do not know if it is a hope so much fulfilled in Russian society today, who would still have such great hope?, perhaps it is in the spirit of the people in Ukraine with their orange banners and their dreams for the future... But for our community this orientation towards a Springtime of Christianity in the world remains central. It is what we arre about... So that leaves us of course in a somewhat isolated, fragile condition.... but that is what we chose. Brother Roger of Taize said, "When that communion which is the Church becomes transparent by striving to love and to forgive, it enables Gospel realities to shine through with the freshness of springtime. Will we enter soon into a spring-time of the Church? Christ calls us, the poor of the Gospel, to live out the hope of a communion and of peace and to let it shine out around us. This is something even the very simplest can achieve." and again: "When a springtime of the Church is a long time coming, the Holy Spirit already allows it to blossom in those who are waiting for it. Could God refuse to let our deserts flower?" (2) It is extraordinarily difficult this year for many reasons, for one as we said there are things concerning the budget which are still not clear and will not be for perhaps another week as discussions continue and we will report of course to you as things become finally clear. But we will need if it is possible $60,000 from this appeal to support the School Retreat Center, Missionary Center and all the outreach to schools, handicapped, prisons, the magazine and the Biblical Institute and so on... the issues include property costs and possible new ministries but the budget will be within the stated amount we gave at the beginning of the appeal. Now to report progress: we have received donations totalling $730. So that is a start. Informal pledges add substantially to this but circumstances are not simple and I do not easily see our way to a place near our goal unless... well unless everyone helps and introduces others, churches and groups and so on, to our work. I ask you then for such response as you are able to help this situation ...Please consider, pray, send such help as you can, speak with others, write to me to encourage us that we are not alone and it is not simply winter, and send pledges and so on... And I am yours in the Lord, +Seraphim +Seraphim Joseph Sigrist Donations for HOSANNA to The Patristic Society c.o 320 South Broadway, Unity P-7 Tarrytown New York 10591 (all correspondence to me: ssigrist@xxxxxxxxx, or sigrist@xxxxxxxx ) For Bank Wires for Hosanna Acccount: Bank of New York 444 Bedford Road Pleasantville New York 10570 Acct.
